Business opportunities in North Rhine-Westphalia

The unforeseen economic implications leave UK companies in an unclear situation as to how their business will be influenced by the Brexit negotiations.

Trade with the EU is crucial for the UK economy. Almost 45 % of the UK’s exports are to EU countries. Germany is the UK’s most important trading partner with an export volume of over 10 % (or € 38 bn EUR).

UK companies with a major client base in Europe should now consider establishing a presence in the EU to ensure their business can better continue to benefit from the advantages of the Single Market.

Within Germany, North Rhine-Westphalia offers excellent prospects for UK companies wishing to establish a foothold in the EU and also substantial ongoing opportunities for bilateral trade and investment.

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is located in the centre of Europe and borders on the Netherlands and Belgium. It is the most densely populated of the 16 federal states in Germany. Around 160 million people live within a radius of 500 km around the state capital Düsseldorf – this represents almost one third of all EU consumers. No other location in Europe reaches so many people with such high purchasing power within such a short distance. 22 % percent of Germany's purchasing power is concentrated in NRW and the annual private consumption is the state is € 346 bn.

The majority of UK subsidiaries in Germany are located in NRW. Examples are AO, BP, Dyson, Vodafone. In total, over 1,500 UK companies call NRW their home away from home.
