“Ich liebe unser Land… Keiner scheint hier zu merken, dass man kaum noch atmen kann.”

This line from a song by the German band Die Toten Hosen can be translated as: “I love our country, but nobody notices that one can hardly breathe here.” Although taken out of context, it captures the profound challenges currently faced by both Germany and the UK.

Above all, we urgently need reform. Sustainable growth depends not only on entrepreneurial drive but also on a supportive regulatory framework and public authorities that deliver services effectively and efficiently. Our economies require smarter, more targeted regulation - regulation that allows businesses the necessary breathing space to invest and thrive.

Furthermore, the current debate about tax increases in both Germany and the UK also does not bode well for future prosperity as it might choke off individuals and businesses. Greater individual self-reliance will inevitably be required, as many European states will no longer have the means to address every challenge - especially with global crises demanding a much stronger role for European countries.

Governments in Berlin and London recognise these realities. What is needed now is not more acknowledgement but decisive action. We therefore hope that the end of the summer will be a turning point and mark the beginning of genuine reform in Germany and the UK.
