European visitors to the UK can now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). From this week (5 March), nationals of EU countries (except Ireland), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City who do not require a visa for short stays and intend to travel to the UK as a visitor or on the Creative Worker concession on or after 2 April 2025 join the list of nationals who must apply for an ETA before travel.

The ETA, which has already been rolled out for other nationalities that don't require a visa to visit the UK (such as the USA, Israel, Australia or Canada), will be necessary for:

  • coming to the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or short-term study
  • coming for up to 3 months on the Creative Worker visa concession
  • visiting the UK for a permitted paid engagement
  • transiting through a UK airport if you must pass through border control
